What to do in case of a peak in pollution due to particulate matter?

Measures to be taken during episodes of atmospheric pollution according to the l'avis du Conseil Supérieur d'Hygiène Publique de France of 22 April, 2012

Threshold of information Sensitive persons, or those caring for them, are advised:
  • to avoid any intense physical or athletic activity, either outdoors or indoors, and give preference to quieter exercise.
  • follow their medical treatment or see a doctor if symptoms such as coughing, respiratory difficulty, or throat or eye irritation appear.
Alert threshold The entire population is advised:
  • to reduce intense physical and athletic activities,
  • to avoid them for sensitive persons (applies to persons with respiratory or cardiovascular pathologies, children and the elderly).
  • to give preference to quiet activities
  • to follow any prescribed medical treatment, be vigilant if symptoms such as coughing, respiratory difficulty, or throat or eye irritation appear and see a doctor if appropriate.
 

What to do in case of a peak of sulphur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and ozone (O3) pollution?

Measures to be taken during episodes of atmospheric pollution according to the Avis du Conseil Supérieur d’Hygiène Publique de France of 18 April, 2000. The Conseil Supérieur d’Hygiène Publique de France (CSHPF – French High Council for Public Hygiene) issued recommendations in case of episodes of atmospheric pollution by sulphur dioxide (SO2),  nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and  ozone (O3).  They are detailed in the following table and are aimed at persons caring for children in particular.

Threshold of information:

For children under age 6 For children ages 6-15 For adolescents and adults
Do not alter accustomed travel 
(home – care facility or school)
Do not alter planned travel 
Recreation or equivalent :Allow children to play outdoors normally.
Do not alter planned activities except for subjects known to be sensitive or who demonstrate discomfort: for them, avoid intense physical exercises and give preference to quiet activities
  • Do not alter athletic activities except for subjects known to be sensitive or who demonstrate discomfort: for them, give preference to less intense physical exercise, or suspend their activity.
  • Athletic competitions : Do not alter except for subjects known to be sensitive or who demonstrate discomfort: it is recommended that they refrain from competing.

Alert threshold:

For children under age 6 For children ages 6-15 For adolescents and adults
  • Limit travel to indispensable trips.
  • Avoid walks
  • Do not alter planned travel
  • Avoid outdoor activities.
  • Avoid outdoor activities.
  • Avoid outdoor sports. In indoor facilities, give preference to physical exercise of medium or low intensity.
  • Postpone any competition, whether outdoor or indoor.
  • Outdoors, avoid violent athletic activities and endurance sports.
  • Give preference to athletic activities in gymnasiums.
  • For persons known to be sensitive or who demonstrate discomfort on this occasion, adapt or suspend the physical activity in accordance with the difficulty being experienced.
  • To the extent possible, move planned competitions outdoors.

  • before you make a trip, think about ways to avoid taking your car:
    when possible, consider public transport, a bicycle, walking or car pooling!
  • think about the people around you, in particular children, and don’t smoke.
  • take care with attention DIY and maintenance products (varnishes, glue, solvents, etc.) :  use with care and limit amounts
